COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech men's tennis team
dropped just one set all day in sweeping to a convincing 7-0
non-conference victory Friday afternoon over visiting SIU
Edwardsville.
The Golden Eagles (6-4 overall) will host Murray State Saturday at
11 a.m. in an important Ohio Valley Conference match. The SIUE
Cougars, who will compete in the OVC beginning in 2011-12, fell to
1-11 overall.
After winning the doubles point, the Golden Eagles swept to wins
at all six singles contests.
At No. 1, freshman Nick Stafford earned a 6-3, 6-4 win over Paulo
Gonzalez. The No. 2 match went to freshman Artura Santa Ruiz with a
6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Rob Young, the middle set being the lone
Cougar win of the day.
Sophomore Justin Kirstein claimed the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 6-3, over
Devan Faulkenberg, Oscar Pachon took a 6-0, 6-1 win over Michael
Chamberlain at No. 4, Lloyd Harris downed Carlos Sanchez, 7-5, 6-4
at No. 5, and the No. 6 contest went to Mario Gutierrez by a 6-2,
6-0 count over Jordan Faulkenberg.
Earlier in the day, Tech's doubles teams set the tone for the
match by winning all three positions.
Stafford and Josh Girling ousted Gonzalez and Chamberlain, 8-3, at the No. 1 double spot. At No. 2, Harris and Alex Chen faced a challenge when Young and Sanches rallied to make it a 6-5 contest, before the Golden Eagle tandem grabbed the 8-6 victory. At No. 3, Pachon and Santa Ruiz earned an 8-5 win over Jeremy Knipp and Dylan Reed.
