Tennis team faces No. 49 Indiana Saturday in season's first dual match

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- A week after their expected season opener was postponed due to winter weather, the Tennessee Tech men's tennis team hopes to get the dual match schedule underway Saturday with a morning contest at No. 49 Indiana University.

The Golden Eagles will play the Hoosiers Saturday at 9 a.m. CST at the Indiana University Indoor Tennis Center in Bloomington, Ind. The Hoosier was 1-1 this spring, with a 4-0 loss to No. 10 Ole Miss and a 5-2 win over Columbia.

The match will not only be the first of the year for the Golden Eagles, it will also be the first dual match under first-year coach Kenny Doyle.

"The guys are anxious to play," Doyle said. "They were ready to go last weekend, but the weather changed our plans. They've gotten outside to play a few days when the weather was nice, they've hit a lot of balls at our indoor facility, and they just want a chance to start competing."

Sophomore Alex Chen is listed at No. 1 in singles in a young Golden Eagle lineup that will feature two freshmen, two sophomores and two juniors. In doubles, Doyle expects the No. 1 position to feature freshman Nick Stafford and junior Josh Girling.

The balance of Tech's lineup Saturday will include freshman Oscar Pachon, junior Lloyd Harris and sophomore Justin Kirstein.

Tech's match at Lipscomb scheduled for last week was postponed and no makeup date has been set. Following the match at Indiana, the Golden Eagles will host Georgia State at noon the following Saturday (Feb. 13) in the team's first home match of the season.
