COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Less than 24 hours removed from the first win of his collegiate career, Tennessee Tech freshman Bryce Beeler checked off another highlight to his already impressive resume in the purple and gold, earning his first career Ohio Valley Conference Male Golfer of the Week honors as announced by the league Wednesday afternoon.
The Maryville native set the program's freshman scoring record for 54 holes Tuesday, winning individual medalist honors at the Big Blue Intercollegiate with a 5-under 208. He collected 11 birdies on the President's Reserve Course at Hermitage Golf Club, edging the other 87 golfers in the field while competing as an individual.
Thanks to rounds of 68 and 69 on Monday, Beeler became the first Tech rookie to card back-to-back sub-70 rounds since Charles Seals in his fourth place finish at the 2017 OVC Championships. His 208 broke current senior Matthew Giles' freshman record of 210 set during his collegiate debut in the fall of 2015.
Joining sophomore Bracton Womack, the two became the first Golden Eagle teammates to win a title in the same season since 2007, when John Fox and current PGA Tour pro Scott Stallings accomplished the feat. The Golden Eagles also collected their second team title of the season, their first time winning multiple events in a season since 2007.
Tech will now target the OVC Championships for its next event, kicking off the three-day tournament in Muscle Shoals, Ala. on Sunday, Apr. 21. Play will take place at the Fighting Joe Course at The Shoals, part of the Robert Trent Jones Trail, and conclude Wednesday, Apr. 23.
