Golden Eagles place fifth at OVC Championships

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The Tennessee Tech men's golf team wrapped up the 2017-18 season with the final round of the Ohio Valley Conference Championships Wednesday afternoon, completing the three-day event at the Fighting Joe Course at The Shoals.

The Golden Eagles saved their best round of the event for the final day, posting a 2-over 290, the second-lowest round of the day among the 11-team field, of finish with an 883 overall. Tech finished fifth overall in the tournament, just one stroke back of tying for third with Belmont and Morehead State.

Jacksonville State claimed the tournament crown, holding on to defeat Eastern Kentucky by five strokes with an 875 overall. Morehead State's Nick Wilkins and Belmont's Jack Uselton tied for the individual lead, forcing a three-hole playoff captured by Wilkins.

Tech's Will Brooks capped his first experience in the OVC Championships with yet another impressive round, carding a 2-over 74 to total a 219 overall. The rookie captured his second All-Tournament honors of the season after tying for fifth place among the 55-man field.

Junior Matthew Giles captured his best round of the event on Wednesday, firing a 2-under 70 after posting rounds of 74 and 78 on the first two days. He tied for 17th with a final score of 222. Freshman Bracton Womack also enjoyed his best score of the tournament on the day, turning in a 1-over 73 to tie for 28th with a 226.

Seniors Alexander Riddle and A.J. Wilkerson both tied for 37th in their final collegiate rounds in the purple and gold. Riddle posted scores of 70, 76 and 85 for his 231 while Wilkerson carded an 83-75-73=231.
