Tech men's golf team ranks eighth after first round of Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech men's golf team completed the first day of the sixth annual Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon, finishing eighth among the 14-team field at Sevierville Golf Club.

Competing on the River Course, the Golden Eagles posted a 295 in the first round, falling just a stroke back of sixth place and two strokes shy of fourth. Eastern Kentucky led the day, posting a 287 to lead Tech by eight strokes and hold a three-shot lead over second place.

Sophomore Matthew Giles led the Tech lineup through the first 18 holes of action, carding a 1-over 73 to tie for 18th among the 84 participants.

Three Golden Eagles tied for 26th with the second-best score among the team's starters, including freshman Will Brooks and seniors Alexander Riddle and A.J. Wilkerson. Each player turned in 2-over 74s. Brooks tallied one of just three eagles among the field on Sunday, leading to a second-place ranking in par-five scoring.

Rounding out Tech's starting five was freshman Bracton Womack, whose 75 tied him for 37th place overall.

Sophomores Cameron Yeary and Dabney Dickenson led all individuals in scoring on day one, each carding even-par 72s to tie for 11th for the best marks overall on the team.

Marshall's Alex Weiss ranked first overall after 18 holes after posting a 4-under 68.

Round two of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate is set for a 9:15 CT shotgun start on Monday.
