Tech men's golf team finishes seventh at Murray State Invitational

MURRAY, Ky. – The Tennessee Tech men's golf team saved its best round of play for last at the Murray State Invitational, finishing the final 18 holes with total of 287 to complete play at Miller Memorial Golf Course.

The Golden Eagles wrapped up their first event of the 2017-18 season with an overall total of 868, moving up one spot in the final rankings to finish seventh place overall in the field of 14 teams. Host and Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State claimed the overall team title, finishing with a total of 850 at its home course. Individually, UT Martin's Hunter Richardson took home medalist honors with a 68-64-71=203.

For the second straight day, it was Matthew Giles who led the way on the scoreboard for the Golden Eagles. The sophomore posted a team-best, 2-under 69 in the third and final round of action, combining with score of 71 and 72 for a 212 overall. He finished tied for seventh overall among the 89 participants.

Freshmen Will Brooks and Bracton Womack both completed their first event at the collegiate level with impressive showing, each tying for 25th overall after scores of 218. Brooks put together a 73 over the final 18 holes while Womack rounded out the action with a 72.

Consistent all tournament long, sophomore Cameron Yeary tied for 37th after carding a 73-74-74=221. The final score matched his career-low for 54 holes, set at last year's season-opening GolfWeek Program Challenge.

Fellow sophomore Charles Seals rounded out the Tech participants, rebounding from a 78 in Monday's second round for a 73 on Tuesday. He finished tied for 51st with a final score of 225.

The Golden Eagles will face a short week prior to their next engagement, heading back to Kentucky for another event hosted by an OVC rival, Eastern Kentucky. Tech will hit the links at the University Club at Arlington in Richmond Kentucky Saturday and Sunday for the EKU Raising Canes Intercollegiate.
