MURRAY, Ky. – The Tennessee Tech men's golf team officially began the 2017-18 schedule with a slight change of plans, heading north for the Murray State Invitational after Hurricane Irma forced the originally scheduled GolfWeek Program Challenge to postpone.

Competing at the par-71, 6,601-yard Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky., the Golden Eagles wrapped up the first day of action of the new season in a tie for eighth overall among the field of 14 teams. Tech finished with rounds of 288 and 293 for a 581 overall, sitting just 10 strokes back of the top three.

Leading the way for the Golden Eagles was junior Matthew Giles, who posted score of 71 and 72 for a 143 overall. His solid first day of play put him in a tie for 15th place among a field of 89 participants.

Rookies Will Brooks and Bracton Womack both put together strong showings in their first collegiate action. Brooks tied for 23rd overall after firing a 1-under 70 in the first round and a 75 in round two for a 145 overall. Womack finished just one stroke behind his fellow freshman teammate, carding a 74-72=146 to tie for 28th.

Wrapping up the competition over the first 36 holes were sophomores Cameron Yeary and Charles Seals. The Yeary tallied scores of 73 and 74 for a 147 overall to tie for 35th. Seals completed the first day with a 152 behind rounds of 74 and 78.

The Golden Eagles will look to conclude play at the Murray State Invitational Tuesday morning, with a 9 a.m. CT start to kick off play, pending potential weather.
