MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – The Tennessee Tech men's golf team fired off the lowest round of the tournament on Tuesday, carding a sensational 286 to begin their long climb toward the top. The Golden Eagles rebounded from an opening round 313, improving by a whopping 26 strokes and leaped from 10th into seventh place.
More importantly, coach Polk Brown's team heads into Wednesday final 18 holes with momentum and within sight of the top teams in the standings.
UT Martin moved from second into first place, adding a 290 Tuesday to its 293 on Monday, and owns a four-stroke lead at 583 over Jacksonville State (290-297) and Eastern Kentucky (298-289). Murray State sits in fourth place (297-291), with Belmont (301-292) fifth.
Morehead State, which also had a drastic improvement, climbed one spot to sixth (308-287) and sits four shots ahead of the Golden Eagles in seventh place. SIUE (314-293) is next at 607, followed by Austin Peay (300-310—610), Tennessee State (309-311—620) and Eastern Illinois (309-321—630).
For the Golden Eagles, senior Bryce Kendrick led the charge. He shucked aside his opening round 81 to fashion a 69 Tuesday and climb into a tie for 21st place at 150.
In fact four of the team's five entries are tied at 150 and 21st place. That includes senior Mitch Thomas (74-76), senior Neil Gannaway (78-72), and freshman Matthew Giles (80-70). Ben Huskey (81-75) is tied for 40th place at 156.
Eastern Kentucky's Will Sallee had the low score of the first two days, edging Kendrick by one shot with a 68, and has taken over the top of the leaderboard with a 72-68—140. Hunter Richardson of UT Martin (69-72) is second at 141
The Golden Eagles will be paired up Wednesday with SIUE and Austin Peay, with tee times beginning at 8:50 a.m.
