HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After just two short rounds, it seems as if the Tennessee Tech men's golf team has picked up right where it left off from the 2012-13 season. The Golden Eagles sit in seventh out of 15 teams at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate.
Following last season's impressive third-place showing at the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, the Golden Eagles have played quite impressively in its first action of the 2013-14 season.
Leading the way for the Tech squad is junior Lee Whitehead, whose score of 135 after the first two rounds has the Knoxville native tied for fourth overall in a tournament featuring SEC powers Mississippi State and Ole Miss, a Louisiana-Lafayette team that broke the tournament's 36-hole record with a 553, and a new course record from Sam Houston State's Zach Cabra (who shot a 62 in the second round).
Whitehead carded a first round 69 before completing a career-best round of 66 in his second 18.
Also performing well for the Golden Eagle squad was Mitch Thomas, who put together a score of 144 with rounds of 73 and 71. Not far behind was sophomore Adam Cunningham, as the Cookeville native used both a 71 and 74 to total 145 on the first day of action.
Following suit were redshirt junior Mason Griffin and sophomore Bryce Kendrick, who finished with scores of 146 and 147, respectively. Griffin, who saw his first action in nearly a year after sitting out the 2012-13 season due to injury, provided great consistency with back-to-back 73s.
Just two shots back of sixth place, the Golden Eagles will look to finish strong on Tuesday morning as round three of the tournament will begin at approximately 8 a.m. CDT.
