Golden Eagles in second after Day One of Grover Page Classic

MARTIN, Tenn. - With two rounds down in the Grover Page Classic, the Tennessee Tech men's golf team has put itself in great position for a championship run, sitting just three strokes back of tournament leader Lipscomb.

The Golden Eagles, who are 14 strokes ahead of current third-place UT Martin Skyhawks, will enter the third round with three of the top 10 golfers in the event.

Leading the Tech team is Adam Cunningham, who, after carding a first-round 70 and second-round 67, leads the entire tournament field of 78. The sophomore tied his career-low score of 67 to take sole possession of the top spot and finish the day with a 137.

Not far behind their teammates, junior Lee Whitehead and sophomore Mitchell Thomas sit tied for 10th overall, each carding 145 over two rounds. Whitehead was very consistent over the day, shooting 72 in Round One and 73 in Round Two. Thomas, however, recovered from a first-round 76 with a monster second-round score of 69.

Overall, the Golden Eagles ranked all five of their team competitors in the top 25. Junior Mason Griffin carded rounds of 72 and 76 for a 148 to tie for 18th while sophomore Bryce Kendrick finished with rounds of 78 and 71 to tie for 23rd with a 149 overall.

Competing as individuals, Maxx Verble and Tanner Garland tied for 39th and 60th, respectively. Verble notched 76 twice on the day for a 152 while Garland put together a 158 off of a first-round 80 and second-round 78.

Just one round remains as the Golden Eagles will look for its first tournament championship of the year. Play is set to begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
