LEXINGTON, Ky. - Two strong, consistent rounds proved to be just the start the Tennessee Tech men's golf team needed Saturday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles finished day one of the UK Bluegrass Invitational in fifth place and within striking distance of second.

With nearly 80 participants on 13 teams in the event, the Golden Eagles proudly placed four in the top 25 golfers after the first day action, leading to a team score of 581 after rounds of 291 and 290.

Leading Tech was wiley veteran Lee Whitehead who bounced back from a tough go around earlier this week with 71 in round one and 73 in the second round. Whitehead tied for 14th with a 144 with 18 holes to play tomorrow.

Closely behind his teammate was Mitchell Thomas. The sophomore finished the day with a 145 after carding rounds of 74 and 71, tying for 18th.

Junior Mason Griffin and sophomore Bryce Kendrick both tied for 22nd overall on the day, carding 146 each with opposite scoring. In round one, Griffin scored 72 while Kendrick wrapped up play with a 74. The second round saw Kendrick shoot the 72 while Griffin carded a 74.

Also in the event was sophomore Adam Cunningham, who finished the day with a 165 after rounds of 79 and 86.

Tech will look to jump several spots over the final 18 holes Sunday morning as play will begin with a 7 a.m. CT fixed start on No. 1 and 10 holes.
