Tech men's golf team remains in third after second round of Hummingbird Classic

SAPPHIRE, N.C. - With just one round separating the Tennessee Tech men's golf team from its winter break, the Golden Eagles are sitting right where they want to, tied for third place in the Hummingbird Classic in Sapphire, N.C.

Tech put together a very solid Round Two Monday morning, shooting 286 as a team to position itself just four strokes behind first-place Appalachian State and one behind Ohio Valley Conference foe Belmont.

The Golden Eagles saw strong leadership from its impressive sophomore, Mitch Thomas, on the second day of the event hosted by Western Carolina. The Knoxville native carded his second consecutive 71 on Monday, placing him in a tie for fourth place out of 56 participants.

Thomas was not alone, as wiley veteran Lee Whitehead turned in an impressive 69 after his first-round 73 to tie with his teammate for fourth overall with a 142 overall score. Also playing exceptionally well on Monday was Mason Griffin. The junior also shot a 69 at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley, placing him in a tie for 34th.

Junior Maxx Verble also sits in a tie for 34th, putting together a 78 in Round Two for a 149 overall score. Sophomore Adam Cunningham wrapped things up for the Golden Eagles, shooting a second-round 77 to finish with a two-round total of 150.

Tech will look to grab its first win of the fall season on Tuesday morning as play for the third and final round will begin at approximately 8:30 a.m. CT.
