DICKSON, Tenn. -- Tennessee Tech's Mitchell Thomas was named to the Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team for his performance in his freshman campaign. The Knoxville, Tenn., native is the first Golden Eagle to be named to the All-Newcomer team since Josh Simer in 2007.
Thomas shot an average of 75.7 over his 27 rounds of play, entering this weekend at the OVC Championship. His highest finish on the season came at the Arkansas Red Wolf Intercollegiate in early April, where he placed seventh out of 112 golfers. His third-round 66 marked the lowest round for a Tech golfer since 2006 and tied the lowest round by an OVC golfer this year.
The Farragut High School graduate joined Chris Baker (Austin Peay), Ashton Van Horne and Sean Buchanan (Belmont), Preston French (Murray State) and the OVC Freshman of the Year Ben Reeves on the All-Newcomer team.
Thomas was named to the All-Prep Extra Team three times in high school and twice helped his team win the TSSAA State Championship. He is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. Friday for the second round of the 54-hole OVC Championship Tournament in Dickson, Tenn.
