Whitehead finishes ninth, Tech men climb to fifth at Big Blue Intercollegiate

OLD HICKORY, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech men's golf team climbed to fifth after the final round of the Big Blue Intercollegiate, hosted by Tennessee State. Sophomore Lee Whitehead finished tied for ninth out of 93 golfers in the tournament.

While Whitehead played as an individual, freshman Bryce Kendrick paved the way for Tech, finishing 15th in the tourney.

Kendrick shot a solid 71+73+70=214 on the week, just ahead of fellow freshman Adam Cunningham, who carded a 67+76+73=216 to place 21st. Senior Lee Maxwell and freshman Mitch Thomas also placed in the top 30, finishing 27th and 30th, respectively. Thomas returned to the clubhouse with Tech's lowest third-round score with a 69.

In a field that featured eight Ohio Valley Conference schools, the Missouri Valley's Southern Illinois won the tournament over Lipscomb with a team score of 847. They were followed by OVC members SIU Edwardsville, UT Martin and Tech. Belmont, Morehead State, Murray State, host Tennessee State and Eastern Illinois rounded out the conference teams.

The Golden Eagles will next see action at the OVC Championships in Dickson, Tenn. April 25-27.
