Cunningham leads Tech men, Whitehead in 5th at Big Blue Intercollegiate

OLD HICKORY, Tenn. -- In the final regular-season tournament for the Tennessee Tech men's golf team, freshman Adam Cunningham leads the Golden Eagles at the Big Blue Intercollegiate, hosted by Ohio Valley Conference rival Tennessee State. Sophomore Lee Whitehead sits in fifth out of the 93 golfers after two rounds.

Whitehead, playing as an individual this week, carded a first-round 67 and tied for second before slipping to fifth after a second round of 72 at the Hermitage Golf Club in Old Hickory, Tenn.

The Golden Eagles sat in third place after outstanding performances by several players, but the second round proved more difficult as Tech dropped to eight place with one round to play on Tuesday. Tech is 12 strokes behind the leader, Southern Illinois, and ten back of three teams tied for second (Murray State, SIU Edwardsville, Lipscomb).

Cunningham, a native of Cookeville, tied Whitehead in the first round with a 67, but fell to a tie for 19th with a second-round 76. He sits at -1, six strokes behind the leaders. Fellow freshman Bryce Kendrick and senior Lee Maxwell carded identical scores on the day and are in a tie for 24th place, just one stroke back of Cunningham. Freshman Mitch Thomas and senior Greg Kitts round out the Tech squad with scores of 149 and 152, respectively.

The third round is set to tee off at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Presidents Reserve Course. A full recap will be posted on TTUSports.com when results are in.
