HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. -- Junior Greg Kitts and
freshman Lee
Whitehead each earned Top 20 individual finishes as the
Tennessee Tech men's golf team wrapped up play in a tie for eighth
place Tuesday at the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate at The Links
at Novedell.
Kitts showed steady improvement over the 54-hole tournament with
rounds of 74, 73 and 72 to finish with a 219 total and claim a tie
for 13th place among the 81 players in the 14-team field.
WHitehead, meanwhile, surged on Tuesday with his best score of the
tournament. After shooting 74 and 76 on Monday, he posted a 70 in
the final round to finish at 220 and a tie for 17th place.
The host Austin Peay Governors, playing on a familiar course, set
a pace that nobody could equal. APSU took the team title with a 860
total and a seven-stroke victory over runnerup Lipscomb (867).
Belmont (872) place third, followed by Murray State (874) and SIU
Edwardsville (875).
Missouri State and the Austin Peay "B" squad tied for sixth place
at 886, while Tennessee Tech and Eastern Kentucky tied for eighth
at 887. Southern Illinois capped off the Top 10 with an 888
total.
The rest of the field included UT Martin (889), Tennessee State
(894), South Dakota (906) and Morehead State (919).
In addition to Kitts and Whitehead, Tech's lineup included freshman
Mitchell Thomas, senior Lee Maxwell and freshman Adam Cunningham.
Thomas close with a 225 total to place 39th. Maxwell's total of 229
put him in 51st place and Cunningham placed 65th with a 232
total.
Tech also sent two players to compete as individuals. Bryce
Kendrick placed 57th with a 230 total while Tenner Garland shot a
234 total and placed 68th.
The tournament was the final event on the fall portion of the
schedule for the Golden Eagle men's team.
