Kitts leads Golden Eagles through first day of F&M Bank tourney play


HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. -- Junior Greg Kitts had Tennessee Tech's best scores Monday during the first two rounds of the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate, and the Golden Eagles are sitting in a tie for ninth place heading into the final 18 holes of play on Tuesday.

Kitts shots rounds of 74 and 73, putting him at three-over par 147 and in a tie for 25th place inividually among the 81 players in the field.

Host Austin Peay played well on the familiar course, The Links at Novadell, posting rounds of 290 and 285 to grab a three-shot lead with a 575 team total through 36 holes. Lipscomb posted back-to-back rounds of 289 and sits in second place, just three shots back at 578. Murray State is four strokes back in third place at 579 after rounds of 290 and 289.

The Top Five teams include Belmont (280) in fourth place with UT Martin and SIU Edwardsville tied for fifth (281). Missouri State (586) is seventh, followed by Southern Illinois (591), with Tennessee Tech and South Dakota (593) tied for ninth. The Golden Eagles were tied for sixth after a 293 first round before slipping to a 300 in the second round.

Eastern Kentucky (594) is 11th, followed by Tennessee State (597), the Austin Peay "B" team (600) and Morehead State (613).

Following Kitts on the leaderboad for Tech, freshman Mitchell Thomas and senior Lee Maxwell are tief for 30th place at 148. Thomas' scorecard included a 72 on the opening round for the Golden Eagles' best number of the day. He added a 76 on the second round, while Maxwell's scores were 73 and 75.

Freshman Lee Whitehead is next for Tech at 150, and tied for 42nd place. The Golden Eagle lineup is completed by freshman Adam Cunningham, who is tied for 67th place with scores of 78 and 79 for a 157 total.

Among the individuals in the tourney are a pair of Tech players. Redshirt freshman Bryce Kendrick is tied for 67th place at 157, while Tanner Garland is tied for 76th place at 159.

Final round play Tuesday begins with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
