Golden Eagles close fall schedule with high hopes for F&M Bank tournament

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – For many, seven is a lucky number. For the Tennessee Tech men's golf team, seven is a goal that the Golden Eagles hope to beat.

After finishing seventh in each of their past two tournaments, the Golden Eagles would like to make a move higher in the team standings when they play Monday and Tuesday in the F&M Bank APSU Intercollegiate.

The tournament, which will include 13 teams and a total of 73 players, will be played at The Links at Novadell in Hopkinsville, Ky., a 7,132-yard, par 72 course. The tourney will be hosted by Austin Peay.

Joining coach Polk Brown's Golden Eagles will be Belmont, Eastern Kentucky, Lipscomb, Missouri State, Morehead State, Murray State, SIU Edwardsville, South Dakota, Southern Illinois, Tennessee State and UT Martin. In addition, host Austin Peay will have two squads in the field.

Tech placed seventh at the UT Martin Skyhawk Classic two weeks ago, and last week finished seventh at the WKU Kenny Perry Invitational.

The Golden Eagle lineup will include the same five players who have represented Tech in each of the first four tournaments of the year – and each of the five has led Tech in one tournament.

At the Skyhawk event, senior Lee Maxwell paced the Golden Eagles while last week at WKU, it was freshmen Adam Cunningham and Mitchell Thomas who tied for Tech's highest finishes. Earlier in the year, Tech was led by junior Greg Kitts at the first tournament, and freshman Lee Whitehead who posted the team's low score in the second meet.

"As we enter the final tourney of the fall season, I am looking forward to going to an OVC rival's event," Brown said. "We have played some very, very difficult courses over the past month so the guys should be ready to go.

"If there isn't much wind, Novadell presents ample birdie opportunities.  Consequently, the guys will need to take it low out there for us to have an opportunity to win.  Given our schedule thus far, this should be a good opportunity for the guys to gain plenty of confidence and have a great chance to win as we close out the season."
