JACKSONVILLE, Ala. -- Freshman Sam Schrock was the
team's highest individual finisher as the Tennessee Tech men's golf
squad jumped one spot in the final standings to finish tied for
11th at the Grub Mart Invitational, hosted by Jacksonville State
University.
Schrock posted his best round of the tourney on Tuesday with a 72,
finishing at 76-74-72--224 and tied for 33rd on the individual
leaderboard. The Golden Eagles got consistent play throughout the
lineup as all six players posted scores in the 70s in every
round.
After opening with a 301 in Monday's first round followed by a
295, the Golden Eagles entered final round play Tuesday in 12th
place. A closing round of 302 vaulted Tech into a tie with Stetson
for 11th place after the Hatters scored a final round 308. The two
teams finished at 898, one shot shy of Utah Valley in 10th
place.
The host Gamecocks won the team title with a score of 864, seven
shots better than Eastern Kentucky (871). Nicholls State (873)
finished third, Austin Peay (879) fourth and Belmont and Armstrong
Atlantic tied for fifth (881). The second five included Columbus
State (888), High Point (889), Samford (895) and Utah Valley (897).
Finishing behind Tech were OVC rivals Morehead State (907) and UT
Martin (916).
Tom Robson of JSU and Kristjan Einarsson of Nicholls State shared
medalist honors, each posting a 213 total.
The Golden Eagle lineup saw all five players finish within four
strokes of each other. One shot back of Schrock was Lee Maxwell
(76-72-77--225) in 38th place, followed by Mason Griffin
(75-74-77--226), Greg Kitts
(77-74-76--227) and Tyler Cassetty
(76-75-77--228). Fellow Golden Eagle Travis Ramsey,
competing individually, was right in the middle of the TTU
standings with a score of 76-74-76--226.
The next event for coach Craig King's team is the Big Blue
Classic, hosted by Tennessee State. It is scheduled for Monday and
Tuesday at King's Creek Golf Course near Smyrna.
