Hoping for no snow this time, golf team heads to Grover Page Classic

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Coming off a second-place finish last week in Mississippi in their first meet of the spring season, the veteran Tennessee Tech men's golf team will be in Jackson, Tenn., Sunday through Tuesday to compete in the 54-hole Grover Page Classic, hosted by UT Martin.

The tournament will feature 16 teams and 88 players at the 6,783-yard, par 72 Jackson Country Club with 36 holes Monday and the final round on Tuesday. The teams will be in town Sunday for a practice round.

Like most of the teams expecting to play in last year's tournament, the Golden Eagles didn't even make it to the site as eight inches of snow in West Tennessee forced the team to cancel its plans. Tech finished sixth in the 2008 Grover Page Classic, with Jake Heatherly and John Fox tying for eighth place individually.

Meanwhile, for last year's Grover Page Classic a few of the local teams did get on the course for one round on Tuesday. and host UT Martin won the weather-shortened event by shooting a two-over-par 282. Medalist honors are wide open this time around, with the graduation of defending individual champion Matt Stephens of UT Martin who shot  a 4-under-par 66.
