MURRAY, Ky. -- It paid off for Josh Simer to get out to a strong start Monday, because he never had the chance to finish on Tuesday. Rain washed out the final 18 holes of the Murray State Invitational, leaving Simer in fourth place to earn all-tournament honors as the Golden Eagles claimed fourth place in the team standings among 14 teams.
Simer, a senior from Bolivar, Tenn., scored a strong three-under
par 68 Monday in the first round a the 6,601-yard, par 71 Miller
Memorial Golf Course. He followed with a 73 for a 36-hole score of
141.
Host Murray State, playing on its home course, took first place in
the team standings with a 281-288--569 total, while the Murray
State #2 squad finished second with 284-288--572. Central Arkansas
claimed third place with a 289-284--573. Tech was fourth at
287-294--581 along with Union University.
The balance of the field included Belmont (583) in sixth place,
followed by SIU-Edwardsville (585), UT Martin (591), Southern
Illinois (592), Lipscomb (593), Lewis (595), Morehead State (597),
UT Martin #2 (602) and Bethel (640).
Just behind Simer individually was senior Jared Dunn, who carded rounds of 71 and 73 Monday for a 144 total, placing him in a tie for 13th. Also in the Tech lineup, Jake Heatherly (73-74--147) tied for 31st place, Wesley Korth (75-74--149) tied for 37th place, and Blake Garrison (79-76--155) tied for 60th.
Playing in the tournament as an individual entry, Tech's Preston
Marshall (74-71--145) tied for 18th place.
Tech's next action comes Oct. 12-13 at the UT Martin Skyhawk
Invitational.
