Tyler Cassetty leads Tech on first day; Golden Eagles fifth at OVC Golf Tourney

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. --Sophomore Tyler Cassetty finished the day as the leader for Tennessee Tech University Monday, shooting a three-over par 75, as the Golden Eagle men's golf team is in fifth place following the first 18 holes of the 54-hole Ohio Valley Conference Championships.

Tech was paced Monday by a trio of golfers from the Upper Cumberland, including Cassetty from Whitleyville, senior Greyson Painter from Carthage and junior Wes Korth of Cookeville.

The nine-team field continues play with 18 holes Tuesday at The Shoals on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Muscle Shoals, Ala., with the final round scheduled for Wednesday.

Cassetty posted a 75 to place him in a tie for 12th place, and was followed closely on the individual leaderboard by Painter and Korth. Painter finished play Monday at four-over 76 and is tied for 15th place, while Korth is at five-over 77 and tied for 20th place.

Senior Jared Dunn, another Cookeville product, is tied for 33rd place after shooting an 81 Monday. Jake Heatherly, a senior from Jacksboro, Tenn,. rounds out the Tech lineup in a tie for 40th place after carding an first-round 84.

Murray State jumped out to a big lead Monday, shooting one-over 289 to give the Racers a nine-shot edge over Austin Peay (298). Host Jacksonville State (299) is third and Eastern Kentucky (304) in fourth. The Golden Eagles shot a 309 team total, putting Tech two shots ahead of UT Martin (311). Tennessee State (313), Morehead State (314) and Eastern Illinois (320) round out the standings.
