With playing and coaching experience in the Atlantic Coast Conference, Chase Mummau joins Tennessee Tech head football coach Bobby Wilder’s staff and adds additional years of experience on the Football Bowl Subdivision level to the Golden Eagles.
Mummau will join the coaching staff, overseeing the safeties on defense.
“We are excited to welcome Chase Mummau to our Tennessee Tech football family,” Wilder said. “He comes highly recommended from Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson. He has a reputation for being an outstanding recruiter. I know all of our players will be pleased with his energy and his enthusiasm for the game of football.”
It also reunites him with Greg Jones, Tech’s newly minted defensive coordinator, who worked together at Wake Forest.
“I am extremely excited to join the staff at Tennessee Tech,” Mummau said. “Coach Wilder has a tremendous track record and has a fantastic offensive mind. I am really excited to be working with Coach (Greg) Jones again. Those two coaches together are going to be a great match and it’ll give our fans something to be excited about as we try to bring a championship tradition back to Cookeville.”
With experience in the ACC and on the FBS level, Mummau has gained a unique perspective towards coaching.
“As a quarterback at Virginia Tech, it’s given me a chance to see the game through both lenses – both as a quarterback and on defense,” Mummau said. “I can teach them what most quarterbacks are thinking in the situation and help them read the routes and rotation. We can allow them to mess with the quarterbacks, disguise coverage and gain the abilities needed to wreak havoc on the passing attack.”
Mummau, who spent his undergraduate days as a quarterback at Virginia Tech, was most recently with the Demon Deacons. This past season, he was a graduate assistant coach, working with the defensive backs. In that role, he helped create day-to-day plans, create cutups for meetings, evaluate defensive backs in the transfer portal and execute practice plans.
Earlier in his time at Wake, he was also a defensive quality control coach and defensive analyst. In this role, he charted game information and helped break down information in-game and figured out what the opposing offense was executing against them. Mummau spent his first few months at WFU as a player personnel intern, evaluating recruits’ game and workout tapes, breaking down those for profiles and discerning the true potential of prospects.
Mummau, who earned his bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech in multimedia journalism – with an emphasis on sports media analytics – also spent time as an analyst for 93.1 The Drive, the ESPN affiliate in Blacksburg, Va., and on the Black and Drew Sports Huddle on ESPN Richmond.
