COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – As spring practice continues for the Tennessee Tech football team, the Golden Eagles got a taste of game action on Saturday in the first scrimmage, bringing out the referees and getting some crucial reps for the team.
It wasn't perfect – a flag here or there slowing down the tempo – but it was still a good performance for the squad as spring workouts go.
Offensively, the Golden Eagles were able to move the ball up the field, collecting four touchdowns on the day. While the defense didn't have any takeaways, it was still a good day for them, limiting big plays and making a couple of key stops.
Ashton Maples hauled in the first touchdown of the day, taking the pass to the end zone for a 34-yard score. Devin Parker's PAT was good to close out the fourth series. Hayden Olsen then added a 41-yard field goal.
Lem Wash took the Golden Eagles into the end zone twice, completing a 20-yard touchdown play to Heath Price, then closed out the day on a 20-yard connection to Metrius Fleming as he was being brought down in the end zone.
Jeremiah Oatsvall got into the scoring as well as he connected with Maples for his second touchdown of the day – a 40-yard pass down the middle.
The Golden Eagles continue spring workouts next week, building toward its second spring scrimmage next Saturday at 1:30 p.m. The scrimmage is part of Wings Up Weekend, which will include the Letterman's Brunch at 10 a.m. and a team cookout following the scrimmage.
