BRENTWOOD, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech hurler Landon Smiddy was recognized as the Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his career as announced by the league Monday afternoon. He shared the honor with UT Martin's Tristan Walton.
Smiddy put the Golden Eagles on his back in Friday's series-opening victory over Western Illinois, nearly going the distance in a 6-3 victory. The senior delivered career-highs of 8.1 innings of work and 11 strikeouts, scattering nine hits while allowing just two earned runs and three runs overall.
The ETSU transfer did not issue a single walk and got stronger throughout the outing. With just one punch-out to his name through the opening four frames, he struck out 10 over the final 4.1 innings to shut down the Leatherneck offense and allow his bats to extend a 4-3 lead late.
Tech is back in the Quill Tuesday evening, playing host to in-state rival Middle Tennessee in a 6:00 p.m. CT affair. The Golden Eagles will then play host to OVC rival Morehead State in a three-game slate starting Friday evening with a 6:00 p.m. tilt.
