Garza claims National Player of the Week honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech shortstop David Garza took home his first career National Player of the Week honors from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Monday afternoon after putting on a power display in five games last week.

While helping the Golden Eagles extend the nation's longest winning streak to 25 games, not to mention break the Ohio Valley Conference record for consecutive wins, Garza batted .409 with nine hits in 22 at bats.

The senior hammered five home runs during the week, tying the for the Tech lead on the team this season with 12 total. He crushed two dingers at Western Kentucky and followed it up with two more at Alabama A&M, including the game-winner. He tallied his fifth of the week in the series finale against Southern Illinois.

Garza scored nine times during the week while driving in 10 runs with his powerful bat. For the week, he slugged 1.182 thanks to a pair of doubles and his five long balls.

The Golden Eagles are scheduled to return to action in Knoxville with a midweek match-up with in-state foe Tennessee on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. CT.
