Grey Team unloads nine runs to claim 2012 Purple & Gold Series Title


COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Grey Team completed a two-game comeback Thursday afternoon, defeating the Purple Team 9-5 in the decisive Game 5 of the Purple & Gold Series. The Grey team which trailed in the series 2-1, unloaded for a series-high nine runs to win the title.

Senior utility man Evan Frazier and junior outfielder/first baseman Brandon Thomason led the offesnive surge for the Grey Team, knocking in three RBI apiece. Sophomore infielder/pitcher Seth Lucio added two RBI himself.

The Grey Team combined for nine hits and did the majority of its damage in the first and second innings, scoring four runs in the first and three more in the second.

The Purple Team actually managed to out-hit the Grey squad, taking an 11-9 advantage in the game. However, the performance by the Grey pitchers proved to be too much to handle.

Senior right hander Tristan Archer picked up his second win of the series behind a three inning, three strikeout performance. Sophomore righty Byron Skinner and junior right hander Ross Spurgeon combined for the final four innings, allowing no walks and striking out four.

The 2012 series marked the second straight year that the series went to a decisive game five.
