Memphis wins 6-1 over Tennessee Tech

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Golden Eagles were within striking distance down the stretch but could not pull out a victory as they fell to Memphis, 6-1, in the second game of a three-game series. Memphis starting pitcher Ryan Fraser went the distance for the Tigers as the Golden Eagles pulled within one run in the eighth inning before falling by five at FedEx Park on Saturday afternoon.

Tech’s record drops to 9-10 overall this season, while Memphis improves to 8-11.

Freshman Zephan Guyear hit his first career home run in the top of the eighth inning, cutting the Memphis lead to 2-1 late in the game. However, the Tigers tacked on four runs in the bottom of the inning to help propel them to a five-run victory.

Guyear finished 2-for-3 on the afternoon with a homer and a double, and was the only Golden Eagle with multiple hits.

Junior Seth Edwards also doubled for TTU and finished 1-for-4, while junior Chad Oberacker was 1-for-4 with a single and his first stolen base of the 2010 campaign. Junior Frankie Beech also had a hit for Tech, finishing 1-for-3 with a single.

Lee Henry (1-2) was charged with the loss despite allowing just two earned runs in five innings on the mound. Henry struck out seven and walked just one as he dropped his second decision of the season.

Ryan Hopkins and A.J. Kirby-Jones combined to pitch the final three innings for the Golden Eagles. Hopkins went two innings and allowed three runs, while Kirby-Jones allowed one run in one inning of work with two strikeouts.

For Memphis, Fraser improves to 2-0 this season on the mound.

The Golden Eagles will look to once again even their record on Sunday afternoon when they again take on Memphis. First pitch at FedEx Park is scheduled for 1 p.m.
