Tennessee Tech Baseball Stadium is named for Howell
Bush;
Visitation is Sunday, funeral scheduled for Monday at 11:30
a.m.
Howell W. Bush, a former Golden Eagle baseball and basketball
player and a long-time supporter of Tennessee Tech athletics, died
this week in Murfreesboro at the age of 94.
With the generous support of Mr. Bush, Tennessee Tech was able to
add lighting to the baseball facility and named the stadium in his
honor in 1997. The current Golden Eagles play in Bush Stadium at
the Averitt Express Baseball Complex.
Listed below is the obituary for Mr. Bush:
94, of Murfreesboro passed away from this life on 21, January 2010
at MTMC of natural causes. He was born one of eleven children to
the late James L. and Eula Jane Mash Bush on December 13, 1915 in
Bradyville, Tennessee. He was married to the love of his life, Lois
Rogers Bush, in 1948.
He attended Bradyville Elementary School, Cannon County High
School and received a B. S. degree from Tennessee Tech University
which he attended on a baseball scholarship and played baseball and
basketball, and a Master’s Degree from Middle Tennessee State
University. He was an educator having taught school, coached and
served as principal in various schools for 30 years in Cannon,
Rutherford, Coffee, Bedford and Moore Counties. He was most proud
to say that while in Lynchburg he had Johnny Majors as a student.
He was a staunch supporter of Tennessee Tech, especially the
baseball program. He was presented an Outstanding Service Award in
2001 and endowed the lighting system for the new baseball complex
built on Tech’s Campus in recent years. He also presented
Rockvale and Lynchburg schools with lighted marquees for their
campus. He also loved farming and raising cattle which he did until
his retirement twelve years ago. He was also an avid baseball fan,
especially the New York Yankees and Atlanta Braves.
He was a member of the Kingwood Heights Church of Christ in
Murfreesboro.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Alonzo, of
Detroit, Michigan; Walter Clyde of Bowling Green, Kentucky; Oren of
Woodbury, Tennessee; sisters, Beatrice and Ona, of Bradyville,
Tennessee, Hester Thomas and Helen Diehl of Detroit, Michigan and
Thelma Staley of Shelbyville, TN. He is survived by his wife, two
brothers, Hoyt Bush and James Bush of Detroit, Michigan and several
nephews and nieces and a dear friend and caregiver, Martha
Hopkins.
Visitation with the family will be from 3:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M.
on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at Jennings & Ayers. A chapel
service will be 11:30 Monday at Jennings & Ayers with Bro.

active pallbearers. In lieu of flowers the family requests that
donations be made to Middle Tennessee Alzheimers Association or
