CHATTANOOGA HOSTS CHRISTMAS CLASSIC THIS WEEKEND

This weekend the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women's basketball team will host the Chattanooga Christmas Classic at the McKenzie Arena.

On Saturday, Tennessee Tech will take on North Carolina A&T in the opening game at 2 p.m. while the Mocs will host Morgan State in Game Two. Sunday's matchups will begin at Noon with Tennessee Tech and Morgan State while the Mocs will host North Carolina A&T in the final game.

CHATTANOOGA (7-3)

The Mocs are coming off a 54-46 upset of No. 7 Stanford on Wednesday night at the Roundhouse. The win was Chattanooga's 43rd in 44 games stretching over four years. Chattanooga is averaging nearly 61 points per game and outscoring opponents by a margin of 3.7 points. From the field, UTC is shooting 41.3 percent and 32.8 from beyond the arc. Over the last three games, the Mocs have made 28 3-pointers including a season-high 11 at UT Martin. Chattanooga is lagging in the rebounding battle with opponents averaging 2.5 more boards per game. On defense Chattanooga is leading the league with 5.7 blocked shots per game and has 94 steals through 10 games this season.

Freshman Keiana Gilbert is leading the Mocs in scoring with 11.5 points per game. Earlier this season she dropped in a career-high 27 against then-No. 4 Tennessee in the Mocs win over the Lady Vols. She has 5.7 rebounds per game, 23 assists and 19 steals. Sophomore Jasmine Joyner leads the team with 9.1 rebounds per game and second in scoring with 10.8 points per game. She has a SoCon best 38 blocked shots this season and 16 steals. Sophomore Chelsey Shumpert dropped in a career-best 18 points in the Mocs win over No. 7 Stanford on Wednesday, leading all scorers and had five 3-pointers. She has 19 treys on the year with nine over the last two games. She averages 9.7 points per game and has 19 swpes with 21 assists.

MORGAN STATE (2-8)

The Bears are looking to snap a six-game losing skid this weekend. After starting the season with back-to-back losses at Georgia and Georgia Tech, Morgan State posted wins over Wesley and Washington Adventist before dropping the next six. The Bears, with a season-best 90 points against Wesley, are averaging 57.2 per game. They are shooting 31.8 percent from the field and 19 percent from beyond the arc. On the boards, opponents are averaging 9.5 more rebounds per game. Morgan State averages 7.1 assists, 17.4 turnovers, 12.3 steals and 1.6 blocked shots.

Tracey Carrington leads the team with 19.3 points per game and has 5.1 rebounds. She has 15 assists, 19 turnovers and 15 steals. Also averaging double figures is Braennan Farrar with 10.2 points per game with 22 steals on the year.

NORTH CAROLINA A&T

The Aggies are 6-4 overall with an overtime win against former SoCon foe Davidson as well as victories against Navy and Oral Roberts. NC A&T lost is last two games including a narrow overtime loss at Appalachian State. The Aggies are averaging 59.8 points per game and are shooting 37 percent from the field while making 25 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc. NC A&T is averaging 36.6 rebounds per game, 1.8 more per outing than its opponents. The team is averaging 10.3 assists, 18.1 turnovers, 11.2 steals and 2.1 blocked shots per game.

Apirll McRae has a team-best 12.3 points per game and 4.0 rebounds. Eboni Ross who has played in and started nine games, is third on the team in scoring with 9.0 points and has a team-best 7.3 rebounds per game. Debbie Smith is second on the team in scoring with 9.4 points per game and 4.4 rebounds. She has 22 assists and six steals. Christina Carter hasa team-best 29 assists and 32 steals and averages 8.9 points per game.

TENNESSEE TECH (2-8)

The Golden Eagles dropped an instate matchup at Lipscomb Thursday night. Tennessee Tech started the season with a win at Florida International before dropping its next seven that included losses to Mercer, Wake Forest, No. 22 Georgia, Southern Miss, Clemson and Georgia State. The team is averaging 61.6 points per game and shooting 38.5 percent from the field and 26.9 percent from beyond the arc. On the boards, the Eagles are outrebounded 33.7-39.0 per game. TTU averages 9.0 assists, 18.4 turnovers, 8.0 steals and 3.9 blocked shots per game.

Samaria Howard has a team-high 14.3 points per game and is 47-of-64 from the charity stripe. She has 12 assists and 13 steals, but has turned the ball over 42 times this season. Candace Parson is second on the team in scoring with 9.6 points per game and has a team-high 5.7 rebounds per game while leading the Golden Eagles with 12 blocked shots. Hannah Goolsby averages 8.6 points and a team-best 15 assists while Yaktavia Hickson is averaging 8.5 points per game and a team-high 16 steals.
