COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Through the generosity of the fans in attendance Saturday during Tennessee Tech's football game against Furman, the TTU chapter of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) raised $2,150 for flood relief efforts in Waverly and Humphries County.
The initiative, spearheaded by senior volleyball student-athlete Lauren Toledo, raised funds to help those affected by the late August flooding that claimed more than 20 lives and destroyed more than 270 homes. Members of the Tech SAAC chapter passed collection buckets through the Tucker Stadium stands during the third quarter of Saturday's game.
"We are proud of our student-athletes for thinking of others in need during these times," said Mandy Thatcher, Tech Assistant Athletic Director for Compliance, Senior Woman Administrator and SAAC advisor. "Even through our own tragedies and beyond, our student-athletes continue to answer the call to serve, no matter how near or far."
The SAAC is a group of Tech student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience, while also organizing, planning, overseeing and participating in community service activities. The committee offers input to the administration and the conference on rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes. SAAC encourages and facilitates the opportunities for all of Tech's student-athletes to participate in community service projects to promote a positive image of the athletic department.
The committee participates in numerous projects including food, clothing and toy drives to support the community, the Wounded Warrior Project, Habitat for Humanity and many more.
