The large team included the squads with rosters of 15 or more student-athletes, while the definition of small team was squads with rosters of less than 15 student-athletes. The winners were determined by the highest team GPA spanning the fall semester of 2020 and spring semester of 2021.

The volleyball team claimed the Large Academic Team of the Year honor for the first time since the award's inception in 2015-16. The soccer program had represented the only winner of the award since then, claiming the title five straight years.

The first-time winners compiled an overall GPA of 3.54, turning in a 3.43 mark in the fall and a 3.64 GPA during the spring semester.
